MANDEVILLE, La. —
The mayor of Mandeville has taken legal action against the city council after it proposed a salary decrease for the position.
The current mayor, Donald J. Villere, who has termed out, was making $114,000 a year.
The council is proposing a $20,000 decrease in the salary for the incoming mayor, who has not been elected yet.
Villere is asking for an injunction that would prevent the council from docking the incoming mayor’s salary.
According to Villere’s attorney, Larry Centola, the attempt to decrease the incoming mayor’s salary violates the Mandeville Home Rule Charter.
The Mandeville Home Rule Charter only allows the council to approve an increase in salary, not a decrease in salary for the mayor.
